Job Description:

Rand Water is currently looking for a General Manager Legal and Risk to oversee the legal and risk requirements of Rand Water, especially the designated National Key Points.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review and structure all commercial contracts with external parties, ranging from customer interface, suppliers and entities.
  • Reviewing the legal strategy in response to any litigation and also craft proactive litigation management strategy.
  • Uphold the primary mandate of Legal Services and Risk Advisory services to protect and defend Rand Water in all material aspects.
  • Monitor residual risk levels against risk tolerance levels necessary to govern overall risk assurance management program.
  • Oversee the provision of legal opinions, support and stakeholder advice on material issues impacting Rand Water, such as contract and litigation management.
  • Develop and implement an Integrated Legal and Enterprise Wide Risk Strategy for Rand Water, as well as a holistic SABS, SANAS, WHO and ISO Risk Frameworks.
  • Provide expert advice to the CE, EXCO, the Board and other senior corporate officers on a variety of legal related matters. • Advising business on new laws, existing laws and legal rights that would impact functionality of the organization.
  • Generate a universal risk register and improvement plans to address organizational risks and gain commitment between management and non-executive directors.
  • Develop a risk matrix and early warning system, tools and reporting template for managing and mitigating risks.
  • Proactive develop mitigating plans and business continuity plans to counter risks that could negatively impact enterprise performance objectives.
  • Lead Rand Water litigation management and strategy in line with the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong leadership capabilities,
  • Proven track record of practicing in a legal and risk management environment, as well as managing a successful. team of professionals.
  • Ability to navigate community related challenges and complexities into business solutions,
  • Legislative Requirements (e.g. OHSA, PFMA, etc.) and Enterprise Risk Management Frameworks
  • Interpretation of Statutes,

Qualification & Experience:

  • 10 years’ relevant work experience and; at least 5 years’ legal and risk management/Legal experience at senior management level.
  • Membership to a recognized professional body or similar recognition in the community of practice (current or eligible for future registration)
  • A Postgraduate Qualification (NQF Level 9) or equivalent qualification will serve as an advantage.
  • Previous experience as General Council in a large organization.
  • At least 10-15 years’ experience at senior management level, leading a team of professionals.
  • Experience in senior management of a large organization with experience in strategy formulation and deal making.
  • Appropriate NQF Level 8 Qualification/An LLB degree and an Admitted attorney or Advocate.
  • Background in practice.
