Job Summary DESCRIPTION A division of Amazon is expanding its presence in Sub-Saharan Africa (“SSA”) and is looking for a talented Compliance Specialist to help drive this expansion. This role presents a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of Amazon’s expansion in the region. We are looking for someone with professional experience in the region who can navigate complex product regulations and then develop and implement related compliance controls for restricted, prohibited, regulated, and sensitive products. In order to attract candidates who may be living abroad, this role has been opened in the US, but the role will be located in SSA. The specific country in SSA in which the role will be located will only be disclosed to candidates who are selected for an interview and, if they live abroad, they would need to relocate there over the course of this year. In order to allow Amazon to effectively filter applicants, résumés must clearly indicate the SSA country(ies) in which candidates are experienced. Key job responsibilities In this role, you will need to research a wide variety of local laws, including, product compliance and trade regulations and then develop and implement related compliance policies. This will involve providing high quality written legal guidance (in English) and independent counseling of business teams across all levels. The person in this role will also be responsible for: Monitoring product regulatory developments Partnering with regulators and responding to their inquiries about products sold in Amazon's online store Engaging with selling partners and helping them improve their product compliance Flexible work schedule to accommodate international time zones. A day in the life As a Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and implementing product regulatory compliance controls that impact the products sold on Amazon stores. It's a high judgment position that requires nimbleness and insistence upon very high standards. You will engage with several internal and external stakeholders to drive initiatives to completion with the goal of preventing prohibited, illegal, and sensitive products from appearing in our online store. The ability to effectively communicate is essential, both verbally and in writing. The role will require that you be self-motivated to learn the operations and will involve both independent and team work in a fast-paced environment that is constantly changing. Basic Qualifications Either 5+ years of prior work experience in a related area OR 2+ years of prior work experience and a US Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent international law degree Undergraduate university degree required Experience conducting legal research and preparing related written guidance Ability to review sensitive and adult content and make appropriate policy recommendations Ability to work autonomously and effectively identify and innovate optimal solutions to a broad range of complex issues Great organizational and research skills with exceptional follow-through and attention to detail Preferred Qualifications Prior experience with project management Prior experience in regulatory compliance Amazon is an equal opportunities employer, and we value your passion to discover, invent, simplify and build.
