Job Description:

Academic Development Unit, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The Academic Development Unit (ADU) in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment invites suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the Engineering Physics and Applied Physics Lecturer (Full Time) position. The ADU is a faculty support resource tasked with improving throughput and student retention through academic, eco-social and where possible psycho-social structures and programs. The ADU Engineering Physics and Applied Physics lecturer portfolio will entail improvement of First Year student academic success through lecturing and development of interventions to (i) Prevent students from being at Physics and Applied Physics academic risk.

Job Responsibilities:

The Engineering Physics and Applied Physics courses offered to all first year Engineering students are semester courses, meaning that timeous support interventions are required to facilitate additional learning opportunities for the students. The successful applicant for the ADU Engineering Physics and Applied Physics Lecturer position will be required to timeously identify students in need of support, develop support material in collaboration with the lecturers from the School of Physics as well as develop and run weekly support lectures and concept tutorials for the students. The holder of this position will be required to incorporate blended teaching techniques (face to face, online and teaching technologies amongst others) in the support lectures and concept tutorials. Additionally, the appointee will manage tutors for Physics and Applied Physics support as well as run mid-semester school camps for these courses.

Qualification & Experience:

Applicants must have completed a PhD in any of Engineering degrees. The ADU is looking for a candidate with at least 3 years’ experience in teaching, administration, co-ordination, setting and marking course assessments, managing large teams of tutors, as well as developing interventions and use of teaching technologies to monitor and provide academic support for large number of students (>300). Experience in blended learning through combination of face-to-face teaching, use of interactive teaching technology and use of online platforms such as Panopto will be desirable.
