CSIR Jobs – Junior Geo-Information Scientist

Job Description:

The primary focus of the research group is to provide planning support and develop planning support systems to various role players in the urban and regional planning domain in South Africa, most importantly the various spheres of government. This planning support is provided in the form of spatial and temporal evidence, produced through advanced spatial analysis and modelling, and the application of the evidence in an inter-disciplinary planning environment.

Job Responsibilities:

• Manage project related data and documents;
• Contribute to the compilation of technical proposals and reports;
• Contribute to the knowledge field through academic publications and conference papers.
• Conceptualising planning support systems/tools;
• Gathering relevant spatial data from various sources;
• Breaking down problem statements and proposing research designs;
• Packaging and publishing project specific analysis, of which web-platforms are critical;
• Contribute to research activities in the group under the instruction of senior geo-information scientists, which includes:

Job Requirements:

• Ability to network and consolidate group efforts in a project;
• Ability to work accurately and efficiently;
• A Master’s degree will be an advantage;
• Good interpersonal and organisational skills;
• Basic understanding of database formats and data structures beyond a GIS environment;
• Working knowledge of ESRI software (ArcGIS Pro, etc.) and publishing on the web using the ESRI stack (ArcGIS Portal) will be advantageous;
• Good communication, writing and presentation skills;
• An Honours degree in geo-informatics, data science with GIS or geography with GIS as a main subject up to the final year with at least two years’ working experience in web-based GIS and socio-economic and/or demographic vector data within a GIS environment;
• An understanding of urban and regional geography as it relates to population growth dynamics and economic development;
